all of the files in the "my documents" folder have disappeared
1. Change the file visibility to see hidden files. 2. Use search tool in Windows Explorer to find missing files. 3. If you find nothing (in 2), the use program Recuva to recover missing files http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download 4. Use program Undelete to prevent possible/future loss of files. Regards Milos

I don't know when or how it happened, but all of the files in the "My Documents" folder are gone. Other folders within the folder are there and everything within those folders seems to be in order, but everything else, word documents, excell documents etc, are all gone. And for some reason, I don't have any system restore points before the 12th of this month. Is there a way to restore my documents? There was one document in particular I was looking for and I did a search but can only find a shortcut. Then an error comes up and says that the document has been moved or changed and the shortcut cannot be used and it asks if i want to delete it. Is there a way I can restore my documents?

Yes i agree with Milos. you have to use thirdparty recovery software to find out the missing or deleted files.
